IIT Bombay : Choice or Craze

I recently read an article on the choices of this year's JEE qualified candidates. And the break-up of top 100 was startling. 69 of top 100 rankers have opted for IIT Bombay. This is a highly skewed distribution of top 100, considering the fact that there are at least 4 other IITs which are comparable to IIT Bombay. I thought of some plausible explanation for this phenomenon.

One factor is the number of selections from Kota. One of my friends told me that the coaching classes there paint a rosy picture of IITB and IITD at the expense of IITK and IITKGP. This time however, even Delhi has witnessed decline. May be that has something to do with placement performance of IITD in last two years.

Other factor of course is location. Candidates prefer cities like Mumbai and New Delhi to Kanpur. IITM takes a beating here because it is in South India. Most of selections from South India are from Andhra and students from that state are in considerable number even in IITK, so I suppose the number would be even more in IITB.

The third factor is the placement record. Clearly the placements are best in IITB.

That is what I could think of right now as reasons for this skewed distribution. However, JEE chairman of IITB offered the reason to be introduction of "minors". Minors were already in existence in Kgp and IITM and still Kgp could not get a single student in top 100. In my opinion this trend is very bad for other IITs. Each IIT has its own fort. Like CS department of IITK is best and same is the perception about Chemical of IITB. Civil is best in Roorkee. So anyone must consider his interest before deciding on any IIT and not the craze which these coaching wallahs create without having any experience of either industry or research.

P.S. : These are my own views expressed on the basis of perception and information from some of my fellow students. If you feel these are not correct feel free to drop a comment.

I think all are over analyzing. IITB receives top ranker every year. the reason is simple. The top branches for quite some time are CS and EE. IITB has better perception anyway. SO IITB CS closing at AIR 70 and IITB EE closing at 150 simply make IITB popular.

@ Anon : Yes CS and EE are top choices but IITK CS used to be most preferred choice a decade ago. The riddle to solve is how IITB has edged out IITK and other IITs.

which is the best of all? I mean all in all considering every factor which IIT gets ranks 1?
I used to think that it is IITK

@ John Joy : I take your point of Kota being one of the reasons. But is it not that Andhra is close to Chennai?

You justify the hype on basis of fests and academic standards. IITK too has a very high standards in Academics and its festivals have been very successful in recent years. Our CS department boasts of some of the best professors in theoretical Computer Science and the infrastructure of Aerospace department is one of the best in the country. By the way thanks for giving some perspective on IITB.

@ Chiya I can only tell you about IITK. I am pretty satisfied with the infrastructure at IITK. The hostels and academic area are well maintained. Sports facilities are great. The placements have improved in last few years (last year was exception due to downturn) and there a significant number of students go for higher studies in the universities of their choice.

clearly iitb stands alone regarding placements, and iitm is trying hard to catch up with iitb regarding placements .
but thats not the real essence if iits,in this sense iitk and iitkgp are the best, they have a research perspective.last of all iitd is not an iit at all,its becoming a spring board for mba and civils aspirants

Thanks for the information Sudheer. This highly skewed distribution of JEE rankers can be addressed if the JEE qualifiers have more information about all IITs regarding placement, research and higher studies prospects.

There was a clear shift some 2-3 years ago because of the very fat Finance salaries that IITB students get as they graduate. Of course that has a more severe impact on the Research overall, than just the skewness of the students to one IIT. Imagining all the sharp minds leaving technology and Research to go to number crunching is such a sad state of affairs, which has to be rectified. I do not know why IITs are coming together and solving this issue. IIT-D and K have the best CS faculty one can think of! Students are too naive not to select these chances of a lifetime to study under such professors.
